We experience day 2 in Rio today, as all of the “segment” people either disembark leg 1, or embark on leg 2. Today we see the real highlight of Rio – the Cristos! Celebrated in traditional and popular songs, Corcovado towers over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s principal port city. The statue of Christ the Redeemer was completed in 1931 on Mount Corcovado, and towers over Rio de Janeiro. It stands 98 feet tall, its horizontally outstretched arms spanning 92 feet. Our tour takes us by bus to the midway point of Cocovado Mountain, where we catch a sky train to the top of the mountain. From there, we climb the steps to the base of the statue. It is well worth seeing, although the lines were very long!
We also have a fabulous view of Rio and the beaches, although the main attraction is the Cristos!
Later in the evening, we enjoy the fabulous sunsets, and look forward to beginning leg 2, and our next adventures!
Santos, Brazil – Pele, Coffee, Churches and Animals were on the agenda today!! Clicking on any of the pics will give you more information!
Today was a short day, which was fine as we were tired from having five port days in a row. I have posted a few pictures you can see by clicking on the picture below.
After having a sea day to relax, we are ready to go again! We’re excited to visit a country which we haven’t been to before – Uruguay! Pictures follow by clicking on any of the pictures below.
Leaving Urugay, we are now in Argentina – the home of Eva Perone. While I thought that I knew her from the musicals, I found out so much more about her on this visit. She was an incredible woman! On our tour today, we take a deep dive into her life at a museum dedicated to her life, see a few other sites, and most importantly, visit a very interesting neighborhood where the tango was born. Enjoy by clicking on any of the pics below!
Today I am 69 years old. I originally told someone it was my “penultimate birthday”, but then I realized that word was defined as the “next to last in a ser
ies of things”. As I do plan on continuing past age 70, I decided that this was NOT my penultimate birthday! Last year I celebrated my birthday in Faukarava with a swim in the ocean. This year, I’m taking a bike ride. This may surprise many of you that know me, as biking is not my passion, hobby – OK, I don’t like riding bikes these days. However, there was a spectacular piece of art on the beach that I believed could only be seen by riding a bike so I booked the tour. Click on the pics below to see how it went!
I’m adding a few pictures from our sea two sea days as we sail to the Faukland Islands. Of course, our daily schedule is always posted on our cabin white board – with our days mostly filled with work-outs, talks, and administration time to manage the household from the computer! There is an updated view of the “faux” cake with new destination markers for some of the stops on our itinerary. This cake is going to be very crowded by the end of the cruise!
We’re getting closer to Antarctica! Unfortunately, there is another ship anchored in the protected cove area, so we have to try to anchor out in the unprotected area of the Atlantic Ocean. Of course, it doesn’t work! We’re waiting in the theatre for the announcement that the tenders were ready for us when we received the news that the port had to be cancelled.
Even though we couldn’t get off of the ship, we did take some outstanding pictures. You can see them by clicking on the picture below:
Antarctica – WOW! Click on any of the pics below to see amazing photos!
Today is all about penguins, glaciers, and the Super Bowl! Details follow by clicking on any picture below.
Today we visit Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in Chile. (Chile also has another small community, Fort William, that they say is the southernmost city in the world. Ushuaia disagrees!) There is no disagreement about that this land was discovered as during the explorations that found the Straits of Magellan and the Beagle Canal. Very interesting stories that we heard about as we were sailing around Antactica. Click on the pictures below for more pictures!!
More scenic sailing as we sail the southern coast of Chile, enjoying the Chilean Fjords – majestic ice-covered landscapes and glaciers. We say goodbye to our team of five naturalists, who have provided the narative to us as we sailed through Antarctica and the Fjords. More majestic pictures follow by clicking on any of the three pics below:
As usual, we begin our port day with a tour – today going to a national park before enjoying the local drink watching the cultural show. After dinner, we watch our favorite show – Krew Kapers! You can find the full photo album by clicking on any of the below pics!
Valentines Day! First we head out on an excursion and see one of the most unusual waterfalls that we have ever seen, before exploring the markets in town. Later, the performers put on an amazing Valentines Day Show for us – the link to the pictures can be found by clicking an of the pics below!
We have one more sea day, and then that’s it for Leg 2! This cruise is flying by – but we’re really looking forward to our next leg, which includes Easter Island and Pitcairn Island. Fingers crossed for good weather!
